Hurstville City Council will host the China Red Demons AFL team along with Sydney Swans players at Hurstville Oval on Tuesday, 16 August 2011.

The visit coincides with the 4th AFL International Cup 2011 which is taking place in Sydney and Melbourne from 12-27 August 2011.

Mayor of Hurstville, Philip Sansom said he was pleased the players were taking time out of their busy schedule to visit Hurstville.

“The China Red Demons are competing in the international tournament alongside a record 19 countries,” he said.

“More than 1,000 players and officials are participating in the event which is staged every three years.”

Mayor Sansom said over the past few years, AFL has been growing in popularity in China.

“A full-time AFL Development Officer has been based in China since 2007, and the Melbourne Demons and Brisbane Lions played an exhibition match in Shanghai during the 2010 World Expo,” he said.

“Additionally, the AFL’s Auskick program, which introduces the game to children, has also been launched in schools across Shanghai.”

Mayor Sansom said Council is hosting a special civic reception to welcome the China Red Demons and Sydney Swans players.

“After the event, children from Hurstville Public School will have the opportunity to kick the ball around with the players,” he said.

“This will help raise the profile of AFL in the Hurstville local government area as well as encourage the students to participate in sport.”
