Council to celebrate 2014 National Tree Day with tree planting and native tree giveaway
Hurstville City Council will celebrate 2014 National Tree Day with a special tree planting event and native tree giveaway on Sunday, 27 July 2014.
Mayor of Hurstville, Cr Jack Jacovou is encouraging residents to come along and roll up their sleeves and do something good for the environment while helping their local community.
“Each year, more than 200,000 people from across the country participate in National Tree Day,” he said.
“Now in its 19th year, National Tree Day has resulted in the planting of more than 17 million native trees and shrubs since its inception.
“The planting of trees helps address important environmental issues like the loss of habitat for native wildlife, soil salinity and erosion as well as being good for individual and community health.”
Mayor Jacovou said Council will provide more than 1,000 trees and shrubs for planting.
“Over the years, residents and volunteers have shown wonderful commitment to this great cause,” he said.
“People in the Hurstville local government area truly enjoy an abundance of exceptional natural bushland and recreational parks and reserves.
“I encourage community members to get involved and invest in our future environment on National Tree Day.”
