Council unveils draft community engagement policy and strategies

Georges River Council Administrator John Rayner is inviting members of the local area to share their feedback on Councilandrsquo;s draft Community Engagement Policy, Community Engagement Strategy, and Community Strategic Plan Engagement Strategy. andnbsp; Mr Rayner said the Policy and Strategies will provide the framework for how Council will engage and consult with members of the local area. andnbsp; andldquo;Neither the former Hurstville City or Kogarah City Councils had an overarching Community Engagement Policy or Community Engagement Strategy,andrdquo; he said. andnbsp; andldquo;Instead the Councils had a Community Engagement Strategy that guided the consultation work they did as part of the development and review of their Community Strategic Plans. andnbsp; andldquo;Council has made a commitment to increase opportunities for consultation and participation and by creating a new Community Engagement Policy and Community Engagement Strategy will ensure Councilandrsquo;s consultation activities are consistent.andrdquo; andnbsp; andldquo;Already Council has undertaken extensive community engagement and consultation on items such as Councilandrsquo;s new corporate logo and the new Hurstville Central Plaza project.andrdquo; andnbsp; Mr Rayner explained that the draft Community Engagement Policy will provide the framework for a consistent and best practice approach to engaging with the community across all Council functions. andnbsp; andldquo;The Policy document outlines Councilandrsquo;s commitment to undertaking community engagement, principles for ensuring engagement is built on openness, transparency, trust and respect,andrdquo; he said. andnbsp; andldquo;The draft Community Engagement Strategy sets out when and how Council will engage with the community and the methods and tools to be used in engagement activities.andrdquo; andldquo;It also lists some key initiatives to be actioned by Council over the coming two years to help achieve its aim of delivering a strong community engagement process.andrdquo; andnbsp; andldquo;The draft Community Strategic Plan Engagement Strategy outlines the methods to be used to ensure all members of the Georges River Community are provided with an opportunity to share their thoughts on the development of the Community Strategic Plan and its review.andrdquo; andnbsp; Mr Rayner said the draft Policy and Strategies will be on public exhibition for six weeks and be available at the Service Centre in Hurstville, at Hurstville and Kogarah Library, or online via Councilandrsquo;s website. andnbsp; andldquo;During the public exhibition period, Council will run community consultation sessions on Wednesday 19 April and Saturday 13 May to gain feedback and respond to questions from members of the community,andrdquo; he added. andnbsp; andldquo;I encourage all members of the local area to review the Policy and the Strategy and share their feedback.andrdquo; andnbsp; For more information please contact 9330 6400 or visit Councilandrsquo;s website at www.georgesriver.nsw.gov.au. andnbsp;[ENDS]
