Join Quillis the dragon for a summer of reading
The Quillis Summer Reading Club is an initiative of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) and runs from Sunday, 19 December 2009 to Sunday, 24 January 2010.
Mayor of Hurstville, Cr Philip Sansom said the Summer Reading Club helps students from
5-16 years of age return to school in the New Year ready to learn and with greater reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
“The Quillis Summer Reading Club encourages children and young adults to get excited about reading for leisure and promotes to parents the importance of reading for literacy,” he said.
“The program offers prize incentives to all participants and rewards reluctant readers along with those children who read books regularly.”
Mayor Sansom said for every book a participant reads, a raffle ticket with their name on it is placed in a barrel for the chance to win various prizes.
“The more you read, the greater your chance of winning, and there are also weekly prizes to keep you motivated,” he said.
“I invite every young reader in Hurstville City to sign up for the Summer Reading Club with Quillis and dive into reading.”
