St George Art Awards coming soon

Artists from all around Australia are being urged to get creative, explore the theme Transformation and enter the upcoming 2014 St George Art Awards.

Mayor of Hurstville, Cr Jack Jacovou encouraged those with artistic flair to craft their works for the biennial national awards.

“The competition, to be launched on 1 July 2014, is open to individual interpretation allowing artists to delve into a myriad of possibilities from ‘revolution and renewal’ to ‘metamorphosis’ to ‘growth and development’ or ‘evolution,” he said.

“Be inspired and open yourself up to a range of artistic styles, mediums and techniques – there is $12,000 worth of prizes up for grabs.

“The winning work of the major $8,000 category, the St George Art Prize 2014, will be an acquisition piece and showcased as part of the Hurstville City Library, Museum & Gallery’s collection.”

Mayor Jacovou said previous entries were of a very high calibre and expected this year’s to be even better.

The other categories are:
• St George 3D Art Prize - $3,000 – works can be made from ceramics, sculpture, woodwork or mixed media
• St George Local Youth Prize – 2 x $250 worth of art materials (one for a primary student and the other for a secondary/tertiary student). Works can be either paintings or drawings and do not need to respond to the theme.
• People’s Choice Prize $500 - (voted by visitors to the exhibition).

The St George Arts Awards is a Hurstville City Council cultural initiative and is proudly sponsored by, the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader.

Entries for the awards close on Friday, 5 September 2014 at 4.00pm.
